Titre : Multisensory Self-Body Perception: Neural Bases and Reorganization following Proprioceptive Deafferentation

Abstract: How do we perceive our own body movements? This perception emerges from the integration of multisensory signals, whose perceptual benefits can be revealed through selective stimulation of each sensory modality. Using fMRI, we further identify the neural bases supporting these multisensory processes. At the core of this system, muscle proprioception plays a pivotal role. Its partial or total loss drives neural reorganization—from the spinal cord to the brain—and is linked to the perceptual alterations observed in aging, phantom limb pain after amputation, and certain spinal deformities in adolescence. Clinical and rehabilitative perspectives of our work will be discussed.
