Title: Developing inclusive teaching methods through decolonising the curriculum
Abstract:
This talk draws on research evidence from my own practice in higher education to explore how inclusive cultures can be intentionally developed and sustained. I argue that meaningful equality, diversity and inclusion work begins by listening to students and staff and by cultivating cultures of inclusion before embeddinginclusive practices.
Grounded in evidence from my own research-based practice, I will share initiatives implemented across teaching and curriculum design that are organised around key themes including: visibility and authenticity, safe spaces, curriculum change, scholarship, student involvement and voice, and the central role of intersectionality. For each theme, I will outline key initiatives, how they were implemented, and the impact observed.
The talk concludes by offering practical, adaptablestrategies to support others in translating inclusive values into everyday practice within their own higher education institutions.
