Title: How motor dynamics shape predictions in humans
Abstract: Predicting upcoming sensory events is crucial for adapting our actions. And our actions guide and optimize our perceptions, refining our predictions. This relationship involves various cognitive processes—such as timing, learning, and attention—that rely on sensory and motor mechanisms. Despite extensive exploration, understanding the relationship between perception and action—and how these processes help us predict upcoming events and adapt our behaviour in an uncertain world—remains challenging. In this talk, I will present and discuss behavioural and neurophysiological results that show the crucial influence of motor dynamics on human predictions. First, I will show how an overt behavioural motor act can influence our auditory temporal predictions and how dopamine modulates this interaction. Second, I will show how neural motor dynamics shape auditory temporal predictions during music listening. Finally, using the reinforcement learning framework, I will present new results that clarify the role of dopamine in the human prediction process.
