Abstract:
Some forms of epilepsy can disrupt language processing.
Patients with drug-resistant forms of temporal lobe epilepsy often suffer and complain about language deficits, notably significant word finding difficulties.
These deficits can have a major impact on quality of life, and they often increase after neurosurgery is performed to treat the disease.
Rehabilitation or speech therapy might help, but only a few exploratory protocols have been described for this population.
Our approach combines psycholinguistics of word retrieval, rehabilitation programs established in other conditions (e.g. stroke), and consideration of the clinical specificities oftemporal epilepsy.
In the talk, I will review language disruption and language rehabilitation in epilepsy, with a focus on word finding difficulties and on our ongoing efforts to develop a rehabilitation program tailored for these patients.
